Watch your Japanese turn green

Every word you meet is coloured by how well you know it. New words start amber. As you see them again and review them, they ripen โ€” until the whole screen is green and you're justโ€ฆ watching.

1. Learn from content you actually enjoy

You're bored and frustrated studying from textbooks and analysing grammar points that don't make sense.

Watch short clips of real people speaking real Japanese โ€” cooking, travelling, gaming, gossiping. When learning feels engaging, it becomes far more memorable.

Yesterday I went to see a movie with a friend.

Meaning in context

Here ๆ˜ ็”ป refers to the movie the speaker went to see with their friend. It's the direct object of ่ฆ‹ใซ่กŒใ (to go and see).

Grammar

ๆ˜ ็”ป is a noun followed by the particle ใ‚’, marking it as the direct object of ่ฆ‹ใซ่กŒใใพใ—ใŸ (went to go see).

3. Remember what you learn

You have no idea how you're going to remember all these foreign words. It feels almost impossible.

Save words straight from what you're watching and they become flashcards โ€” with the original clip attached. Review them with spaced repetition until they stick.

Questions

How is this different from Duolingo?+

Duolingo teaches you sentences written by a curriculum team. Yomi teaches you the Japanese people actually say โ€” with all the contractions, fillers and slang textbooks leave out. You don't do exercises; you watch, tap, and review.

Do I need to know any Japanese already?+

No. Tell us your level during setup and we'll start you on clips you can mostly follow. Everything is tagged by estimated JLPT level from N5 to N1, and you can change it whenever you like.

Where does the content come from?+

Clips are short moments from Japanese videos on YouTube โ€” vlogs, interviews, conversations โ€” played through YouTube's own player with the creator credited. Transcripts are generated automatically, then broken into words you can tap for the reading and meaning. Spot a mistake? Tell us and we'll fix it.

Will my flashcards work with Anki?+

Yes โ€” import and export are on the roadmap for launch. Your words are yours. If you already have a known-word list from Anki, WaniKani or jpdb, you'll be able to bring it in so Yomi doesn't teach you words you know.

Is there a free trial?+

Yes. The yearly plan comes with a 7-day free trial, and everyone gets a limited number of free clips per day without paying anything.

When does it launch, and will there be an Android version?+

iOS beta is opening to the waitlist first; Android follows. Join the waitlist and you'll be first in โ€” and everyone who pre-orders keeps lifetime access.

Why we're building Yomi.

The problem

Almost everyone learning Japanese hits the same wall. You finish the beginner course. You can read the hiragana. And then you put on something in Japanese and understand almost none of it โ€” because nobody talks like a textbook.

The shift

The people who break through the wall almost always do the same thing: they stop studying Japanese and start consuming it. Hours of real speech, looking up what they don't know, letting the patterns settle in on their own. It works โ€” but doing it properly means juggling a dictionary, a subtitle file and a flashcard app all at once. Most people give up on the setup long before the method can work.

The outcome

Yomi is that whole setup collapsed into one screen. Real clips, a transcript you can tap, and a flashcard deck that builds itself out of the words you actually met. No tabs, no exports, no configuration. Just press play.
